Gold Coast is generally regarded as the area between Oak Street on the south and North Avenue on the north; Clark Street on the west and the lake on the east. The neighborhood was unremarkable until 1885 when Potter Palmer, a leading citizen of Chicago and founder of the world-famous Palmer House hotel downtown, built a castle-like home at 1350 North Lake Shore Drive. Gradually, Chicago’s elite began relocating to the area and Gold Coast real estate became among the most desirable in the city.

Sadly, the Palmer castle was torn down in 1951 for a high-rise but by then the new character of the neighborhood was long established. Today, barely more than a stone’s throw from downtown Chicago, Gold Coast still has many quiet, tree-lined streets and stately homes. Luxury high-rise condo and apartment buildings line Lake Shore Drive and the neighborhood is full of highly upscale restaurants and boutiques—even a Lamborghini automobile dealership! Art galleries, theaters and more complete the cultural feel to the neighborhood.

“All real estate markets are local,” says conventional wisdom in the industry, and demand and prices for Gold Coast condos and townhomes remains high. Location, history of the community and housing stock mean that Gold Coast and Goal Coast condos will remain highly desirable for a long time to come, even as the economy goes through its inevitable cycles. The Gold Coast Historic District is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
