WICKER PARK CONDOS

You’ll find Wicker Park condos in one of the hottest and most talked about neighborhoods in Chicago.

It’s a community that’s not best known for the small park of the same name, but for the arts, retail and entertainment culture that draws people there to live and play.

Interestingly, despite its popularity Wicker Park is not one of the 77 officially recognized neighborhoods in Chicago. Instead, Wicker Park is part of a community called West Town, which also includes Ukranian Village. But whether officially designated or not, Wicker Park has been around a very long time and is very well known.

Boundaries of this neighborhood are generally regarded as Bloomingdale Avenue (1800 North) on the north, Division Street (1200 North) on the south, the Chicago River on the east and Western Avenue (2400 West) on the west. Wicker Park is a near-Northwest Side community, just south of Bucktown.

Wicker Park condos are available in virtually every configuration, from studio units to multi-bedroom penthouse stunners. Loft, vintage and new construction are all represented, depending upon when the market is being searched and at what price level. Diligent searching and a little patience will probably be required to find more than just a few condominiums in the mid-$100K range, and the prices go up from there. A search at the time of this writing revealed a number of residences approaching the $1 million mark, with a handful of properties costing even more.

Wicker Park is a neighborhood with a classic big-city story of settlement, boom, eventual decline and recent gentrification. Today, Wicker Park is one of Chicago’s busiest neighborhoods, densely packed with housing and commercial. The community is served by an elevated rapid transit line that connects downtown Chicago with O’Hare International Airport.

The sprawling intersection of North, Damen and Milwaukee is the nerve center of Wicker Park. Around this bustling junction you’ll find a rapid transit station and a large number of nightspots, galleries, restaurants and boutiques. A few blocks away on Hoyne Avenue you can view the remaining graystone and brownstone homes once called “Beer Barons’ Row” for the mansions that the city’s wealthy beer makers built there.

Wicker Park was home to the late Nelson Algren, a writer who portrayed the lives of many of the city’s rougher, back alley characters. He left Chicago in the 1970s, having suffered considerable disdain for much of his career even though his work is highly regarded today.
